Format column with both alpha and numeric characters

I need to format a column that may contain both Alpha and Numeric characters in it, but can't figure out exactly how to do it. The usual format for the information I'm entering is usually something like 901048-011480-4. Occasionally, the number will have alpha characters in it as it is a Hexadecimal number, i.e. 901048-G1H480-9. I know I can use ######-######-# to get the correct format for the number only entry, but is there a way I can make it format the same way regardless of if it is an alpha or a numeric character? Thanks.

You could pre-format the cells as TEXT and everything that you enter in there should retain the formatting that you want.

Yeah, but that doesn't achieve what I'm trying to do. I want to be able to just enter the number as 901048G1H4809 and have Excel autoformat it to 901048-G1H480-9. I can get it to do it for 901068-011480-4, but not if it has any alpha characters in it.

The inclusion of text with numbers makes the entry text. I see nothing in cell formatting that even hints at what you want to do. You can however use the TEXT function in another cell that will give you the format that you want.

    Formula: copy to clipboard
