    readonly file

    Hi,

I dont want to alter the file attribute "read only".
Still, I need to know how i can open it in read-only mode by either double click a excel file or its shortcut.

    Possible?

    Thanks

    Re: readonly file

Are you trying to protect the workbook?

You can lock the workbook and/or the worksheets..

    Re: readonly file

I had this on-time, but deleted accidentally. I now forgot how i did this. It was some kind of alteration to the "target" section shortcut of the file. After this alteration, when double click the shortcut, the file would open in a read only mode.

We have a excel file on network that lot of us need to read. I am doing this is to keep people from opening the file and then even administrator wont be able to open the file for editing.

I am sure, its not the password protection of the workbook.
    Thanks

If you are talking about your own files, save them as read-only reccomended when you save them. It is a check-box under Tools|General Options when you "Save As".

    Kudos !!
Thanks for the help. Though its not a file shortcut solution, it still does the same service.

You can do something like this.

    1) Either you can allow the file to open only for certain users
    2) Either you can allow the file to open only for certain machines
    or
    3) Allow the file to open only certain number of days, months etc.

    Re: readonly file

Here is a screen shot of the properties. This is the shortcut I had deleted accidentally. I could now recover from our backup. This one will open the file read only. Thanks for all the input from you guys.

    Re: readonly file

These aren't the correct tabs for Excel 2011. Looks to me like all these worksheets/workbooks are set up protected/locked so you can't change anything. How do I unlock w/ Excel 2011??
