Custom Sort list of more than 255 characters

I am trying to create a custom sort list that exceeds the character limit. It is to sub-divide the 12 months of the year (e.g. Jan_14A, Jan_14B, C, .... Dec_14A, Dec_14B). How can I expand the character limit?

Why not replace repetitive characters with a code?

|1 replaces ", Jan_"
|2 replaces ", Feb_"

Etc.

This saves Four characters per entry.
