Extend table formatting in new rows?

I have a table with some basic formatting (every other row is shaded and there's one column with a double border). Every time I add a new row I get some weird formatting that doesn't match the rest of the table: The first 5 cells of the new row are light blue (entire row should be either white or gray), and only the double border and the first and last cells have any borders (every cell should have "all borders").

I'm sure this is from something I did at some point in the past but I can't for the life of me figure out how to make each row automatically format the way the rest of the table is formatted. I've cleared the formatting and deleted the rows below the table with no results. Thanks in advance!

It sounds to me that you have manually formatted in such a way that the formatting in other areas of the table have been affected. I have managed to do this by putting a double border around a column in the table after formatting with All Borders and other formatting and some of the other formatting that I had done either disappeared or was changed in an unwanted manner. All borders was one of the things that just disappeared in new rows.

Is this what you are experiencing?

Thanks newdoverman, all borders is indeed one of the things that doesn't show up in new rows.

My experiment was quite weird in that even the double border around the column got a bit corrupted in the process. I left the top border off the column formatting and the next row flipped the formatting so that the bottom border was missing!

This is quite the surprise for me as I have only removed formatting from tables.

Man, that sounds like a headache! Let me know if you figure anything out that works. I'll do the same.

I wouldn't bother much with formatting a table with "raw data" that has regular inputs. If a report is necessary, then copy the raw data to another location and format to suit your presentation. If you are looking for a fancy input, look into the creation of a user form.

If it is really necessary to have the table with special formatting, try on a copy to record a macro that would wipe out the existing formatting and create new formatting as needed.

Sorry newdoverman, not sure I follow you. It seems that excel is applying some sort of formatting that makes my data more difficult to read, so the only formatting I'm trying to do is to make the data look as orderly as possible for my own sake, not necessarily trying to make it look fancy and presentable.

Maybe I'll try your macro idea. It does seem like there should be some straightforward way to tell excel to keep the formatting consistent with the addition of new rows, though, don't you think?

If you upload your workbook, perhaps I can see what you are trying to do to make you data more easily read. Right now, I'm only guessing.

Great, here's a sample version. The worksheet in question is the first one: Students

Try adding another line below the bottom one and you'll see what i mean.

Re: Extend table formatting in new rows?

Upon opening your workbook, I immediately saw that you were encountering the same problems that I encountered with my experiments. The manual formatting of the columns (individually) caused a lot of problems. I first selected the whole table and applied the borders for the exterior and interior....the solid light line both for the interior and the left, right and bottom and a heavier line for the top. This solved some of the problem. I then selected up to and including column H within the table and applied the double border line to the right border while keeping the other formatting. Another thing that interfered with the table was the manual formatting of the background for the rows. I deleted that and also deleted the formatting in the rest of the worksheet.

As far as I can see, the table now acts like it should. New rows get alternately coloured and the borders retain their formatting.

What do you think of the result?

One more quick question, can you explain how you deleted the manual formatting in the table and deleted all the formatting in the rest of the worksheet?

Re: Extend table formatting in new rows?

To get rid of the horizontal formatting of the rows, I selected the rows and clicked on the background color button and chose No Fill.

To get rid of the formatting in the rest of the worksheet, I clicked in the row under table and selected the whole row, then Ctrl + Shift +Down Arrow. This selected all the cells below the table. Then on the Home tab, I clicked on Clear, then Formats.

    That was it.
