Tony - thanks, but OMG I can imagine what this would take to nest to 5 levels ( that's a lot of parentheses!) -
never mind if I had to expand it to 7 or 9 columns as the boss was dreaming about out loud today...

I was afraid that it would be something like this.
I think that VBA is going to be the way to go ...
