Color Image in Drop Down List

I need help getting some color images into a drop down list. I want to be able to click a cell and a drop down list will show a "red light" "green light" "yellow light". Not using conditional formatting.

IE. cell A1 shows a value..I want to go into excel see this value and then determine what kind of status I want to make it in Cell A2..this would be the traffic lights. This "status is subjective and cannot fall into conditional formatting.

Re: Color Image in Drop Down List

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately I want a symbol to be present in the drop down list and not a number/text. Conditional Formatting does not recognize symbols.

Seems like a simple task but as of right now it doesn't seem possible in excel.

Re: Color Image in Drop Down List

    Hello adman,

    Thank you for the feedback.

Please could you attach a sample workbook with the symbols you are using.

Make sure there is just enough data to demonstrate your need. Include a BEFORE sheet and an AFTER sheet in the workbook if needed to show the process you're trying to complete or automate. Make sure your desired results are shown, mock them up manually if necessary.

    Remember to desensitize the data.

Click on GO ADVANCED and use the paperclip icon to open the upload window.

    Thank you.

    Hello adman,

You certainly don't ask easy questions.

As you have quite correctly mentioned, it seems that symbols cannot be done with Standard Excel features. See if you can make do with what is on Sheet2, and if you that is not acceptable, then we may have to consider using Shapes via VBA.

Re: Color Image in Drop Down List

    Hey Winon,

Thanks for putting this together. This works and is exactly how I am working around this now but ideally I really want this sheet to look extremely clean. With this solution, a guide explaining the values is required.

Can we consider using shapes via VBA? I am not a VBA expert at all.

    Thanks!

I was talking nonsense here, sorry.

Sheet 2 now looks "Pretty" neat, don't you think?

Re: Color Image in Drop Down List

Sorry Winon, I am able to do what you produced but really want to be able to use color images in the drop down with out using any numbers/text. Its looking more and more like this is not possible. Excel add-on is needed.

Re: Color Image in Drop Down List

    Thanks for the feedback adman.

In that case we color the font, the same color as the Shading.

You can use shapes and some event code to display a list.

Re: Color Image in Drop Down List

This is on the right track, but is there a way to have the shapes be viewed instead of the "event code"?

I don't understand the question. Who's viewing the event code?

    Hello adman,

Since it seems that you don't mind a VBA approach, would you consider doing it as demonstrated in the attached sample Workbook?
