Format cell with a value with a color, then range of cells to left a different color

Not sure if this can/should be done via VBA, conditional formatting, etc....

I'd like excel to be able to look at each row of a data range (in the example D3 thru K10),
Identify the first cell with a numerical value,
Format that cell one color (orange in the example),
Then format all cells left of that value a different color (black in the example).
(all cells to the right of the value can remain unformatted).

Please see attached example.... Thanks in advance!

Select the range D3:K8 and then make New Rules for conditional formatting using the formulas given below.

For black
