My currency sign was replaced by generic currency sign (excel 2010)

    Hi Everyone,
I have a problem with lots of excel files that I received recently.
Some of the values are set with generic currency sign (“¤”) instead of my regional currency sign.

My windows 7 settings are ok when I checked the Currency (under Control Panel -> Region and Language -> Formats -> additional Settings -> Currency).
I work with Excel 2010 and when I check the cell format, I can it is set to “Custom” with this Type:
    _-"‏¤‏"* #,##0_-;-"‏¤‏"* #,##0_-;_-"‏¤‏"* "-"??_-;_-@_-

How can I fix this so all those generic signs would be replaced with my local currency sign?
I have hundreds of those cells and I can’t just select them manually.

    Tnx, Yaniv.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Do you mean the values are formatted to show a currency sign or the currency sign is actually part and parcel of the cells. i.e. are the cells really strings commencing with a currency symbol followed by numeric characters.

Upload the workbook and tell us what are your regional settings so that we can test by temporarily changing our systems.

I would probably approach this with a vba solution along the lines of:

    Hi Richard,
Thank you very much for your reply,
If its ok, i would rather avoid uploading a file since some of the content is company confidential.
(Maybe I can work it later to remove some info from it).
Here is a cell value for example:
    ‏¤‏6,610

As you can see, the cell contain a number which is sometimes generated by some mathematical formula, and sometimes just a manually inserted number.
Instead of the correct currency symbol, i have the generic currency symbol.
These are the cells that I would like to change to my regional currency.

    Hi ragulduy,
Thank you very much for your reply.
I tried running your code, but the moment I pasted it into the Visual Basic Editor,
The "¤" was changed immediately to my regional currency.
So the code could not "identify" the cells having this symbol inside them.

Unfortunately therein lies the problem. I can't see, least not in the context of the workbook. If you could upload the workbook (suitably anonymised) as requested maybe we can come up with an answer.
