    Sharing an excel-based program

    Hi everybody,

I have two computers operated by Window-7. in Computer #1 I have an excel-based program. I'd like to share this program by both computers, I'm wondering:
1-How can I connect both computers?
2-How can users of both computers can use this program?

    Thank you in advance

    Karim

    Hi there,

You'd need to set the computers up on a network, which is outside my area of expertise and outside the remit of this forum!

Once that's done you can set up the file to allow shared access (Review Tab --> Share Workbook)

    Hope that helps,

    Tom

You cannot share the application. If your Excel has multiple licenses, you can install another copy on your other computer. Otherwise it is purchasable at your local computer shop.

If you are doing this at home and both computers are setup on a home wifi network then the first step is already complete. If that is complete then you would need to go to the folder location and share it so that both computers can see the shared file or move it the the shared user location which is what I would do. Then open the excel file and go to review tab and share the workbook. Now on the other computer go to the networks window on the computer it is in start on the right side under computer you see all the devices in your network go to the first computer and then go to the share folder and and the file you should be looking for is there i would then create a shortcut so that it is easier to asccess and then both compters will still have access to them but if the network goes down then 2nd machine will loose access until the network is restored.

    Hope this helps

    Hi aworfolk,
    I did the following:
1- Connecting the two computers by an Ethernet cable(yellow cable)
2- Networking: through "Network&sharing", I saw the connection of the two computers. Also, In my computer I saw the tow computers under the "network" Icon.
3- I Opened the shared program in Computer 1, clicked "sharing workbook " under "review"
4- I made a copy of the shared-program and paste it in "my documents" under "C: drive" --- users----Public.
5- back two computer 2, under the "network" opened the "computer2" icon--- C: drive ---- "users"----Public--- opend the shared program.
6- I actually did made a change in the shared-program in computer 2, but I did not find that in the shared-program in computer 1 unless I saved it in computer 2.
what I'm looking for is when I make any change in shared-program in computer 2 or computer 1, I can find it instantly in the other computer without saving.
    Thank you in advance

    Karim

    Re: Sharing an excel-based program

From the last statement, you are talking about the data file and not the program. If I understand what you want to do, this might be a viable solution for you.
Use Remote Desktop to access the program and files on another computer as if you were sitting at the other computer. The open file is visible on both computers and can be accessed simultaneously but there are limitations.

I have tried this using two of my computers and it does work. I opened Excel and both computers had the same file open. Only one person at a time can edit but it does work. The active cell on one computer is the active cell on the other computer.

    Re: Sharing an excel-based program

    Hi newdoverman,

Thank you so much for your reply and support. I'm so sorry for misunderstanding which is my mistake. what I exactly want to do is:
    - I already have an excel-based program (workbook), composed of 8 worksheets.
    - I want to use this program to create electronic files to my customers.
    - I want to put that program in either my desktop or reception desktop.
    - give the front desk an access to the same program So that the receptionist can enter the
customer name and contact details in certain worksheet of that program where I can see that
in my desk simultaneously before the customer get in my office.

    Thanks a lot

There is a way to do what you want using Excel. Here is a starter article on the subject.

You will need to have Excel installed on all computers that will have access to this file. How to set up the "network share" is probably the area that will be the most difficult. I don't know for sure as I am not a network expert of any kind.
