    dear friends,
I would appreciate a suggestion for a formula getting an ascending order from a long list of numbers.
    Please see dummy file attached.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I use excel for mac, 14.3.9

    thanks a lot,

I don't use a mac so I may be limited on this. But if it has a data tab, select the data you want to sort (columns a:c) then look for a data tab, (you may have to enable it. a submenu should come up which would allow you to sort all your data by whatever column you need.

Instead of a formula why not use the built in capabilities of Excel?

Select column C and copy it.

Paste Values in a convenient place.

On the Data tab, click on Remove Duplicates.

    Sort into order.

Thanks both but it didn't work.

newdoverman: I did select the values in column C and copied in column E, but it didn't work.

pboost1: i didn't understand completely. this is what i did:
    - select the data C4:C28
    - clicked above in the menu "data" and then "sort"
    - a new window pops up saying: "you have selected only some of the available data. Only available data will be sorted. What do you want to do? expand the selection or Continue with current selection" I click Continue sort.
    - i select sort from largest to smallest
    - nothing happens.

    please see file attached.

There are formulae in column C and when you sort, that isn't going to work. Copy the values from C4:c28 and Paste Values where you want the listing. While the listing is still selected after Pasting, click on the Data tab, click on Remove Duplicates, deselect my data has headers and click OK. Select the data that remains and on the Data Tab, click on the Sort icon. Deselect My Data Has Headers, make sure that the indication is to sort the column with the data that you want to sort and click OK. That's all.

Here is your file back and the yellow area is what I got doing exactly the procedure above.

You will have to expand the selection so all data sorts by values in column C. Try that and see how it works.
