    Return letters in a row in 1 cell

    Hey all,

    I have a sheet which basically does this:
    If A9 is blank, return 'A9', if not, return 'blank'. (to identify which cells are populated on another sheet)
    It does this from A9 to X9.

    Then in A10, if A9 says 'A9', just return 'A'.

    So the end result has the entire A10 Row with all the letters that aren't blank. In my sheet, I have the following:
    A10 = A
    K10 = K
    N10 = N
    P10 = P
    Q10 = Q

    What I want is to have cell A11 to return (for example) = A, K, N, P, Q - as they are the only values found.

    Is that possible without using a macro? Thank you very much for your time!

    This doesn't make sense to me.

    Attach a sample workbook. Make sure there is just enough data to make it clear what is needed. Include a BEFORE sheet and an AFTER sheet in the workbook if needed to show the process you're trying to complete or automate. Make sure your desired results are demonstrated, mock them up manually if needed. Remember to desensitize the data.

    Thanks for the reply, newdoverman, apologies for the lack of sense!

    I think the attached should show it a bit better for you. I think this could be accomplished in a much better way than the way I have done it. Let's see if I can explain it a little better too (the more I think of it I think I do need a macro).

    I have an export from SAP that I dump into the 'export' tab. Each time I export this, the columns that are empty differ. I tried to identify this by using the 'Example' tab to show which cells are empty.

    I want to have a formula that simply returns which cells (A9 --> X9) are empty. Based on which cells are empty (in this case, AKNPQ), the user runs the macro associated with that combination.

    The idea being that the end user can dump the export, and excel automatically identifies which columns are empty and shows the user which macro to run.

    Apologies if I've over-complicated it.

    I think that a VBA solution would be the way to go with this as a formula would be, I think, rather cumbersome and probably prone to error.

    I can't help you with VBA but I'm sure that a VBA expert will be able to do this.

    Hi Reapz,

    Find the attached with many changed formulas. Does Row 9 change often? If it does then I can do better. Let me know the next step in this problem and we can make it much better.

    Mate, thank you very much, that's perfect!

    Yes row 9 on the 'Export' tab does change often, in that the blank columns come in 6 different variations. One time the blank columns are AKNPQ, the next export it's AMO or ALOQT columns etc etc. I've asked our SAP super user to see if the export can be done differently (via layouts) and he is stumped. So yes I expect row 9 to change.

    Thanks again! +rep & solved
