Stubborn formatting for phone numbers

Hi,

I'm trying to format my phone numbers so that they look like this: (555) 555-1234.

I go in numbers, and then special, phone number, but when I type my number in the cell (I'll type 5555551234), it'll display it as 555-555-1234.

I tried going in special and clicking the [<=9999999]###-####;###-###-#### type, but that did absolutely nothing.

This is bothering me to no ends. Could anyone help me?
