With the trend function, is the most recent data supposed to go in the topmost cell or the bottom cell?

It will depend on exactly how you are implementing the TREND() function (help file for reference: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...832.aspx?CTT=1 )
the only time I think it would matter is when you are leaving the known_x argument blank. As noted in the help file, when blank, Excel assumes the count numbers (1,2,3,...) for known_x in performing the regression. Whether most recent needs to be at the top or bottom of the known_y range would depend on what x means to your problem and which end of the spectrum makes the most sense.
FWIW, this problem might be best avoided by not leaving known_x blank.
