I need Help with Averaging Non-Number values

Working on data for a project.

I have a column that can have 1 of four values. The values are words. For example sake:
a row can either have Alpha, Beta, Delta, or Gamma in this column.

I need to be able to tell what percentage of each value there is for a given set of rows. (I need to do this on about 50 chunks of similar data, but I need the percentages for each chunk)

    Any help appreciated.

I suggest you post a sample data set to your question as I can't really follow what you want.

Post an example of the data layout AND a mocked up version of how you want the solution to look. You don't need to make the solution functional, just give us an idea of what you want.

Can you post some sample data and and the results you want to see...based on the sample?

    Try

    =COUNTIF($B$2:$B$23,"Alpha")/COUNTA($B$2:$B$23)

Re: I need Help with Averaging Non-Number values

You could let a pivot table do the heavy lifting for you...
    • Select the data area
    • Create a new pivot table...(I can't remember the XL2003 commands...Maybe: Data.PivotTable?)
    ...Row Labels: Drag Student here
...Values: Drag Student here ...(it will display as Count of Student )
...Right-click on the Count of Student area
    ...Select Value Field settings....Show_values_as tab
    ......Select: % of Total

You'll see the values you're looking for.

Is that something you can work with?

Jon's solution will work for me. I'm using this to select sub groups for further data analysis. Dividing groups by percentages of purity for Alpha, Beta, Delta, Gamma to draw correlations on effectiveness based on another colum
