Adding Checkmarks and x's on dropdowns with colored columns

I do apologize if this questions as been previously asked. I have seen a few post but still cannot figure this out.

What I want to do is. In Column A (about 400 rows) I want to have a drop down of Check marks and X's.

When say a Check mark is selected I would that row to become green. In this case, Row A1 to J1. Since thats all the data I have. And vice verse for the X's, except for red.

I am very new to this so please be as simple as possible when responding.

So in Column A, I want to be able to select either the Check or x and color that entire row up to column I. Bases upon which choice was made. You can see here Check is green and X is red.
