formula look up deleting duplicates and tally

My apologizes if this is covered else where I did several searches but could not find a formula that worked for what I'm trying to do. I have a spreadsheet (tab 1) that is filled in via a form that teachers fill out on google docs. I am trying to add a tab 2 that will be an ongoing tally of student's merit/demerits from tab 1. I need help with a formula to use that will sort out students names so they are not duplicated and then tally their merits/demerits. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
