    Run Pace formula error

    Hi all,

I found this runner's log that I really like online yesterday, but the Pace calculator has some issues that a few of my co-workers and I can't figure out. Normally, a pace calculation would be simple: pace = distance / time. However, because this particular spreadsheet takes info from various columns and uses them in some embedded graphs (that I would like to keep functional), the formula is way more complex than my very limited Excel knowledge is able to comprehend. Also, the pace calculation is currently listed as a decimal (7.5 minutes / mile) as opposed to time format (7:30 minutes / mile) and I have no idea how to convert it.

If someone could take a look and help me address these two issues, it would be HUGELY appreciated!

    Thank you.

The equation for pace is indeed listed simply as distance / time. It's using table headers instead of simply using cell references, so that may be throwing you off.

As for time, simply plop a /1440 to the end of the pace equation and then format those cells as time.

    Re: Run Pace formula error

I understand the basic concept of what the pace formula is doing with the headers, but something is causing an error in many of the pace calculations. As I stated, some of them are correct, some are a little off, and some are WAY off and I can't figure out why. For example:

Line 26 states that the pace is 9.66 minutes / mile - by my calculation, the correct pace should be 9.84 minutes / mile.

Line 39 states that the pace is 0.00 minutes / mile (I'm apparently running at lightspeed) - my calculation is 8.22 minutes / mile.

It looks like the biggest error is in the lines that have run entries that extend to an hour or more, but even some of the runs less than that have issues.

The error is being caused the length of the decimal. Excel only holds so many values below zero and when it reaches the cutoff, it rounds.

I'll see if a find-mid equation can change the time into normal numbers and do the math behind the scenes without converting to tiny decimals.

    Re: Run Pace formula error

The only way I was able to fix it was to Convert the Table to a range, under design.

    Then C/D = accurate data.

You may wish to alter the format of the left axis to Time, under Number, with increments of 0.00138888888888889 (2 minutes).

To see various increments, type in a time value in a blank cell, and change format to general to see what it really looks like.

Also cells C64 and C65 need to be re-entered as 00:33:35, etc to get the values correct.

Ok, stupid question - I think I figured out what you meant me to do with altering the format of the Time column and got that done, but I'm a little confused on 'Convert to Range' function. I see where it's at, but do I need to select the entire spreadsheet? Just the time column? I've tried several things and I don't see it changing anything. I have a very basic understanding of Excel and even simple formulas are new to me.

    Re: Run Pace formula error

Clicking that button instantly converts the entire table, all the columns, everything from a "table" to just a normal spreadsheet.

Then when you do C/D it looks like C/D, not [@RunTime]/[@Distance].

You will literally need to change E to =E25/D25, and then copy it downwards.

Disregard, I found another page explaining how to do a pace calculator and it had me reformat my number columns... apparently the custom [h]:mm:ss format was throwing something off and when i changed to h:mm:ss, the whole thing magically worked. thank you for trying to help me.

No worries - I appreciate your attempt to help me. I'm just really unfamiliar with Excel. I gave you some added reputation for your efforts. Thanks again!
