Select whole column contents from a certain cell

Hi

I'm trying to select the column contents in column D from cell D3 going down. If I was selecting the whole of column D the formula would be D:D but to adapt it to my needs, I've made the formula D3:D which logically speaking should work but it's returning a #Name? error. How do I adapt my formula to select everything in column D starting from D3?

The formula which I'm actually trying to build is a dynamic one so it counts the number of lines (or days) when theres new data added and I'm trying to avoid manually drag selecting the range of cells everyday new data is added. Hence why I'm not trying the obvious approach.

Ok using the COUNTA formula, I need to have it count all the rows from D3 until there's a blank cell. What would the formula for this be?
