    Sorting version formats

    hi,

Can anyone explain how to sort values in excel cells which are in the format "1.4.5.6.7".

    suppose i have values 1.0.3.0.0, 2.0.0.0.0, 100.0.0.0.0, 30.0.0.0.0, 1.0.0.5.6
i want them to be sorted as 1.0.0.5.6, 1.0.3.0.0,2.0.0.0.0,30.0.0.0.0, 100.0.0.0.0

how can i achieve this on a column values on a button click?

    Regards,
    Ravi

A helper column can assist here.
See the attached example ... basically you search each number between the decimal points, and multiply them by 10, 100, 1000 etc as you go from right to left. The example explains it better.

Once this is done you can sort on your result column and it will put them all in order.

I have left some blank lines in column A so you can test it out ... after you enter your versions then just do a sort on column K.

you will be able to tidy up the sheet by combining the Find decimal formula and the Value formula all into one cell. I left them broken out for ease of understanding.

    Hope this helps
