Remove duplicates to create list of unique values?

I have a column of information that contains a good amount of duplicates at the cell-level (meaning the entire content of the cell, which is text). I need to make a list of the unique names in that list. What is the best formula?

Later versions of Excel have a 'remove duplicates' button on the data ribbon. In earlier versions, the same can be achieved with Advanced Filter and selecting the unique values only option.
