Creating a sum from multiple entries within a specific date range

Hi,

I'm having difficulty with a spreadsheet I want to create

I have a list of raw data which details payments to individuals and the associated date,

I want to calculate the sum of payments paid to each person for each month,

I think this might have something to do with arrays but I've not managed to get my head around this particular function yet,

I've attached a simple version of what I'm trying to achieve below

Thanks for the post, this is what I have been doing in the past, and for the majority of what I need it for this does the job,

However it does give me problems when I try to link to this data from other tables etc

May be sumifs.... See attached sheet.

Note : I have change the end dates (reduced by day), since the end dates and next month starting dates cannot be same.
