    Need help with Solver

I have never used Solver before, but it appears to be what I need to find a solution to my problem. I have some pass rate data in a spreadsheet and I need to figure out how many Domestic and Foreign graduates took and passed the exam based on knowing how many overall took the exam and the pass rates for the Domestic and Foreign graduates. The sheet is attached - I need to figure out cells B4, B5, B7, and B8 (with Solver, I think). Any guidance would be appreciated.

Solver won't help with this. You need to break down the number of all candidates taking the exam between foreign and domestic. The % passing is based on the total number taking the exam so I am unclear as to how you came up with a % pass for domestic and foreign without knowing the number of people that took the exam. How man of the 10175 were domestic? If only 100 of the 10175 people were domestic, then 76 have to pass to give you the pass % of 76%. Or if 1000 were domestic, then 760 have to pass and you still get the same 76%.

    Maureen:

While the pass rates for Domestic and Foreign are released, the number of them taking the exam is not. Accordingly, I am attempting to ascertain how many Domestic and Foreign examinees passed the exam and then based on that, I can easily find out how many Domestic and Foreign examinees took the exam. So the question is how do I find out how many Domestic and Foreign examinees passed the exam simply by knowing their pass rates and the overall # of Domestic + Foreign examinees taking the exam. I don't know any formula that can figure this out - it seems as if I just have to guess values until I come up with the right set of x and y values.
