New to here. Sorry if this is not in the right place.

I want to be able to have text in the cell (so I know what type of data i should enter there), but once the data is entered (numerical value) the formula can be applied. If I put a number in, then delete the number, I want the text to return to describe what the cell is for. Some online forms have a greyed out text for fields that what information needs to be entered. I want to do this for my spreadsheet.

That may not explain very well what I want to know so I will just explain what I am doing this for. I am editing my shops stocktake sheet, which is used to calculate cogs.

I want to be able to have various ways of recording quantities of things. For example, sauces can be measured by whole buckets, bottles, and weight (bucket that have had some taken out). But below sauces, I will have drinks, that will come in cases, and bottles. So this is why I don't want to have headings on top of the columns, they are all measured differently.
