Formula to highlight +/- delete duplicates that have a 7 word phrase in common

Hey guys,

I have two columns that I'm comparing and the entries in both columns are similar (but not exactly the same) and I need to remove the similar entries. I'd like to highlight and/or remove entries that have the same 7 consecutive words (phrase) as my filter to prevent mismatching. Could someone show me how to do this
1) How to highlight
2) How to delete
3) how to adjust it if its 5 works instead of 7.

Thanks a bunch. This forum is awesome.

Create a conditional formatting rule. Conditional Formatting -> Highlight Cell Rules -> Text that Contains

Then enter the 7 consecutive word phrase. Any cells that have that phrase will be highlighted.

You can then use a Data Filter to hide all highlighted cells (or only show the highlighted ones). From there you can delete, or keep all the other ones as you like.

Is that what you were looking for?

Thanks for the reply. Im not quite looking for that.I don't have my own 7-word phrase. I need excel to highlight cells that contain the same 7 word phrase i.e I have multiple text boxes and each box has sentences in them. The sentences in these boxes are may be similar but NOT identical. I want excel to essentially highlight cells that have the same 7 word fragment.
For example, lets say I have two text boxes as below. I want excel to automatically be able to pick up that they both contain the same 6-word fragment "this computer is an excellent product." and highlight them.
A1
Hi. this computer is an excellent product. But i do not like it at all
A2
Hello. this computer is an excellent product. And i like it a lot

Hmmm, I don't know how to do what you're asking. Even if it is possible, I foresee a lot of difficulty because you'll have to deal with typos, abbreviations, different word choices, etc. Excel finding and matching is pretty exact. You'd be best (if this is a form you can control) by forcing people to use drop-down menus to select categories.

I think I am willing to take that risk since I am using this as an initial screen so any conflicts I will be manually looking through. I just cannot go through a 1000 text boxes trying to compare them. Any other suggestions? I just have two columns to work with. Can't really modify it. It won't be updated or anything either.

My best guess would be to take specific words that would be unique to particular types of posts (like computer) and do conditional formatting or "find" on those.

If the phrases you are looking to find (duplicates for) could be buried anywhere inside a longer string of text - at the start, in the middle, at the end - you may be asking too much. I cannot think think of any regular formula/function that would be able to do that for you, the variables are just too vast.

Maybe someone can put some VBA together for you
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
