Indirect data validation from another workbook

    Hello
I have 2 workbooks. On my data workbook I have columns of exercise "movement types", and under each a list of corresponding exercises. I have named the ranges on this workbook. On my program workbook I have created a data validation box for the "movement types", no problem. On my next drop box I am trying to dependently reference the first drop menu. I created an indirect range of the "movement types" and named it "exercises". From there I created a data validation @ =exercises. But it did not work. Does anybody have any ideas what I did wrong? Thanks

I'm not entirely clear but I'm guessing that the contents of the second combobox are dependent on the selection in the first.
Your main problem is in using two workbooks... If you store the data on a hidden worksheet in the program workbook you will find it much easier.

Re: Indirect data validation from another workbook

thank you. the only reason i wanted to do it on a separate workbook is because I will ultimately be using the Primary file very often, and if i wanted i wanted to be able to change the info in the drop box, it would be easier to have to just change it on just my data file. and than have it carry foward to my Primary program. does this make sense?
