help needed for UNI project. number of column formula required

hi

i need a formula on office 2011 for the mac, basically what i am trying to achieve is as follow:

column
x3 never
y3 seldom
z3 sometimes
AA3 often
AB3 very often
AC 3 always
AD3

i need to give the following words numbers if they appear in the above columns and then show that number in column AD3.

Never 1
seldom 2
sometimes 3
often 4
very often 5
always 6

can anyone help please

the way the data has been collated means that the values will not always be there, i need column AD3 to look across the other columns for one of the words. only one word will be entered so never in x3 or seldom in y3 but there will not be 2 words. so column AD3 needs to look across the colums find the word and the value.

does that make sense, i have cut some data off and placed on a new spreadsheet so hopefully you understand better

In that case why don't you not only use column C and fill that column with the words.

Then you could use vlookup for the value.

i understand that, but this data has come from surveys done online and this is how it downloaded, its 100 individuals answering 60 questions each so, it would take hours just to place there answers in to one column for each block
