    Totalling like items

I have an excel spread sheet with over 17K lines - each employee has 4-5 lines with gross wages. I need to total each employee.
    IE

    JT Gross 12/21 5000.00
    Gross 12/1 4500.00
    Gross 11/30 4000.00

    JM Gross 12/21 400.00
    Gross 12/1 300.00
    Gross 11/1 4500.00

I need to total each employee...
Thanks in advance and please assist....

    Jann

I think a pivot table will help you with that.

You don't add an excel file, so i can't show you.

It's difficult to see exactly how your data is arranged, but it looks as if you have an employee's initials in column A, but these only appear on the top row of each block - it would be better if they appeared on every row (you can use conditional formatting to hide them if you wish), and then you would be able to use SUMIF, where if you had the initials in a separate table (e.g. column F, starting with F2), then you could have this in G2:

    =SUMIF(A:A,F2,D:D)

then copy down for as many employees as appear in column F.

    Hope this helps.

    Pete
