Cannot get a cell to retain formatting when a part of a text string

Hi all

I have a sheet that has 4 weeks of dates in it.
I want to have text in a cell and include a cell reference in that cell

The reference c10 is have formatted as [ Mon 4 Feb 2013 ] using custom date format ddd dd MMM yyyy.

My problem is that this presents the date in a numeric format (in this case 41309).

How do i get the cell to retain the date formatting? I have tried formatting the destination cell in the same format, but it wont register?
