Showing text in a text string.....

    John.xls

Ok bit a of self taught person here but here goes.

I'm trying to make a spreadsheet to show various things to do with English Premier League Football (or soccer...).

So everything is driven from a spreasheet which is a basic list of the fixtures that go

    Home Team|Goals|W/D/L|vs|Away Team|Goals|W/D/L

So basically what it shows in another sheet so far is average goals per game for both home and away teams when you enter in the weeks fixtures.

What I want it to show is W/D/L (which is win/draw/loss). Now is there a function that will search a list of teams say in the Home Team for the season and return in order that teams 'Form' . So for example it may show: WDDDW (FOR WIN, DRAW, DRAW, DRAW, DRAW, WIN).

As we already enter the W/D/L it would just be a case of say matching Arsenal (a team name) and it returning this in a text string.

Apologies for not explaining it too well as alot of my excel stuff is self taught/picked up from the web

    Thanks in advance!

You can use an INDEX/MATCH combination, or possibly VLOOKUP. Can you attach an example workbook (the FAQ describes how to), and then we can try out different formula in there for you?

I see that the latest results are at the top of the sheet - do you insert new blank rows there to maintain that order for new results? It might be simpler to have a column for the date of the fixture and then just add new fixtures at the bottom, and then to sort in reverse date order when you have entered them all.

I'm a bit busy at the moment, so I'll pick this up again tonight.

Re: Showing text in a text string.....

In the attached workbook I've made use of two helper columns (K and L) to get the appropriate home and away sequence for each result. The last-5 home and away results (or -4 or -3, depending on how many games played) are then shown in column G of the summary table, which you might find more convenient to move to another sheet. If you insert some new rows from row 2 so that you can accommodate new fixtures, then you should copy the formulae in K and L upwards to K2:L2. All the formulae will adjust automatically when you insert new rows.

    Hope this helps.

    Peter,

Thats perfect! Just what we were after

I have now one problem! I have inserted the rows and put in this weekends results, but now where it returns W/D/L I get a #NAME? error in the cell?

The error occurs when you insert the cells to the top of sheet?

Not sure why you are getting #NAME error - can you attach the faulty sheet?

When I open the file I cannot see any #NAME errors (or any kind of errors).

Mind you, I do get a Security Warning that Data Connections have been disabled, so maybe that has something to do with it.

I'm not sure if I can help you any further - it seems to work fine for me (you would need to copy the formulae from K3:L3 up into the blank cells above).

Thanks anyway Pete - could well be a works computer sercurity measure? I know some people can't open up Macro's in work.

Might try it on my Dad's personal laptop and see if that fixes.

thank you very much though - much appreciated!!!!
