Variable Decimal Places in One Spreadsheet

I'm sure I'm missing something but this is driving me crazy. How can I format a column to vairable decimals?

    Example:
    01.234
    651.1
    651.12
    890.00
    080.00
    659

I found one that said to do ###.#### but it is still dropping the 0 if it's before the decimal and it's adding a decimal to the whole number. Is there any easy setting for this?? TIA!

    Moneal,

What are the original numbers, and then, how do you want them to be shown... That would make it easier for us to determine what you need to do.

    I'm sorry.

These are the types of numbers and this is how I want them to be formatted. Basically, I want to be able to type in a number in a cell regardless of where the decimal is and have it be exactly how I type it.

    054
    054.0
    054.00 or 054.12
    540
    651.12
    540.00
    659
    V58.01

Sometimes it has a 0 before it, 054.
Sometimes it has 2 zeros after the decimal, like 540.00
Sometimes it has 1 zero after the decimal like 540.0
Sometimes it's just a whole number like 540
Sometimes it has 2 regular digits after the decimal like 540.23
Sometimes it has just 1 regular digit after the decimal 540.1
Sometimes it has a letter like V or E before the decimal like V58.01 or E856

    Does that make sense?

Well, the easy solution would be to format the cells as TEXT. Then they will display as desired. Of course, if you are using the cells in calculations or match/lookup formulas it would likely result in tremendous headaches.

Going to try to think of a better solution...

Re: Variable Decimal Places in One Spreadsheet

So...what would you like it to look like? same as it is (ie- 0 at start remains, 0's at end remain ?)....not really sure why you would want the front zeros to stay, but the custom format cells gives ways to accomplish any of these..

    Hope this helps
