Eliminate the #NUM! error in a MAX function

This equation gives me #NUM! in the cell when x< 0 although I expect it to give me 1 per the MAX function. If x > 0 , it works as expected. any help?
    = MAX(ROUNDDOWN(0.5*((x)^0.5 + 1),0),1)
