    Cumlative total with a difference

Hi All, new to the forum so thanks in advance for any help offered

I have an excel sheet which has a cell which says 'if Y in field x then date stamp field x'. Another states 'if Y in field x then enter a value (retrieved from another cell)'

That is all working fine, but the purpose of this s/s is to track value earned on a project. So each task is listed in excel, with a value, and when it is complete (enter the Y as above) we earn the value. So I want to know how much value is earned on a cumlative basis. Using a typical cumlative formula doeas not work as tasks completed may not be in order. So row 1 may be completed, then row 15. So as I enter Y into row 15 I want it to give me the sum of row 1 + row 15 value.

As a side I may want to expand this to give me cumlative totals for the week or month

    Hi Jasonjhc,

    Welcome to the forum.
If you want to sum all the values against Y, you can use SumIF function.. try it and in case of any issues, upload a sample workbook. thanks.

Re: Cumlative total with a difference

Thank you, tis was a great help.........for future use. But it does not quite give me what I want.

I'd like to keep the cumlative total before each update.

Using the SUMIF gives a cumlative total overall but I'd like it to work as follows

A1 - using sum if increases cumlative toal to 15.
A32 - the value will increase and give me the correct cumlative total but this will also change A1. But I want the previous cumlative total to remain in A1

    Hi,

attached (hopefully) is a sample workbook

as you can see column A has dates. And in E I have the SUMIF function working. But the is an overall cumlative figure. What I'd like to do is have a cumlative monthly figure. So column E will show 4 different cumlative value. One for Sep, Oct, Nov and Dec

Re: Cumlative total with a difference

    Thank you very much.

'one way' is so close to what I want, but due to the fact I may go back up the list it 'just' doesn't work.

    If I enter a y on row 5, i get a cumlative value of 77. Correct

    If I jump to row 8 and enter a y I get a value of 173. Correct

But then if I go back to row 7 it gives the correct value, but not quite how I want it as I am not going through the rows in sequence. I want row 7 to return the value of 229 but for rows 5 and 8 to remain at 77 and 173 respectivley

An alternative appraoch could be one the Y is enter the value in row F is locked, if possible?

    Thanks again for your help

Out of three, which way is close..?

Also, suggest you to share the scenario in Excel and I hope that this scenario will cover all aspects thanks.

Re: Cumlative total with a difference

    The column labeled 'one way'

The scenario is for a burndown chart within project management. When a task is complete we 'earn' the value, but we might not (and never will) approach the tasks in strict sequence

Thank you, your replies are much appreciated

    Hi jasonjhc,

I have checked it and found that sequence is an important key.. entering Y in a cell will sum up either all values on top or all values on bottom... it can not go up and down and skip cells in between .. thanks.

Thak you for the reply. What about copying the value automatically into another cell, then 'locking' the cell somehow? Do you know if this is possible?
