Need help grouping 12 people into 4-somes.

Greetings all. I'm new to the forum and have a problem that maybe someone here can help me with.

I have 12 golfers that I would like to put into three 4-somes every day for 5 days. And during the course of these 5 days I would like for everyone to have played in a 4-some with everyone else at least once. I thought maybe there are formulas/functions in Excel that can help me, but if so I don't know what it is. I'm hoping someone here can help me figure it out. Many thanks.

Hi greyfoxx12 and welcome to the forum,

There are most likely formulas for this but I've not found one. Instead find the attached sheet that I've used in the past. There is a list of players in Col A and the pairings in Columns C -> G. The important part of this is the matrix in columns I to U which counts the number of times each player playes with each other player. You will need to change the names in Col A to your guys and the Col I and Row 2 to match their names too. Start putting players in foursomes and see what the counts are. I hope this helps. I still need to understand the formula in J3 that DaddyLonglegs gave me to count these partners. See my question at

    MarvinP,

Thanks a lot. I'll try your matrix and see if it works for me.
