    Comparing two excel files

    hey all,

    I know the title sounds like something easy, but I'm trying to compare 2 excel files and am having some trouble.

    So basically, the first sheet will look like this:

    I figured I would have to remove the comma space and middle name from the first spreadsheet, but the hyphenated names are killing me! I've tried TRIM, MID, RIGHT, LEFT...I cant figure it out. I need to try and match the name in column A of first sheet with name of columns A&B of second sheet. Once I find a match for the people, I have to make sure B from first sheet matches C from second sheet. If it doesn't, I need it to let me know.

    Thanks all, this is really twisting my brain
    Joe

    @jwpj

    As long as In column A of the first sheet, the last name is first and the first name is last this might work for you. Formulas are not my strong point.

    Is there any unique identifier for each person in both the files?

    Re: Comparing two excel files

    No there are no unique Identifiers. Mike, thanks for the answer. Haven't tried it yet, but I have 2 questions:

    1.) Will it matter if there are commas in one and not the other?

    2.) The names are not always going to correspond to the names on the second sheet. For instance sheet 1 is an employee list which lists the employee and their corresponding cost center. Sheet 2 is a phone bill imported into excel. Basically, I have to check and make sure that the phone bill of said employee is being billed to the right cost center. However, some months, employees may not have a phone bill, so cell "A1" on sheet one will not always be the same name as cell "A1" on sheet two.

    @jwpj,

    Answer to your first question is No it shouldn't matter with commas, and im not very sure about you second question. Like I said worksheet formulas is not my strong point. Id have to test and see.
