Excel 2003 Formula or Edit/Replace to delete middle initials not working

I have a list of names some with middle initials with a period after them and some that do not have a period after them. In the past I believe I have used edit and replace to fix this issue but it does not seem to be working this time. Does anyone know how to fix this issue, thank you for any help in advance!
