Count months based on criteria and range.

I know this may be a simple task and I thought I could do almost anything in excel straight up and I do not know VB or macro's. Sample of my data is:

Joe 1......4/23
Joe 1......4/2
Joe 2......3/23
Joe 1......2/23
Joe 3......2/23
Joe 2......3/23
Joe 1......1/23

I would like to use a simple formula as "=Countif" or "=Sumifs but I can't seem to make the data add up right.

I'm looking for the answers that will sum the different months in this sample (Jan, Feb, March & April).

Heading...Jan.....Feb....March.....April
Joe 1 =.....1...............................2
Joe 2 =.........................2
Joe 3 =...............1

In this paticular instance I have three maintenance personnel and want to know how many jobs they hve taken on in a month. I know it's simple but I just can't get it done trying for two day's daaa....

Help anyone help....
