Countif Function / Variable

I am trying to get my worksheet to perform a countif function.
I want it to start at cell AM24 and count the number of "R" between cell AM24 and in the same row, so many cells over defined in AF24.

I tried a few different functions using Indirect and none of them seemed to work.

Any ideas? I know this is easy and I am just messing up the formula.

AM24 is the start of the row I want counted. I want it to count the number of "R" in the row defined by AF24. AF24 will change in relation to the days, calculated in another formula.

=COUNTIF(AM24:INDEX(AM24:XX24,0,AF24),"R")
change the XX column to the column of your range extent
