    Hello,

This is my first post. Please forgive my unknowing. I am trying to create a spreadsheet that will add hours value based on a text cell header that includes different items. I need to to tally the hours for the different items as they are entered by various users. Example:

    Phone Meeting/ Tin/ 1
    Video Planning/ Charlie/ 2
    Recruiting/ Charlie/ 2
    Planning & Management/ Tin/ 1
    Admin/ Tin/ 1
    Phone Meeting/ Alex/ 1

I have attached a sample of what I have so far...

Re: How to add hours based on different cell items/ headers?

You need to swap your ranges in the formula in G3 so it becomes:

    =SUMIF(B3:B18,"Admin",D3:D18)

    Does this answer your question?

Re: How to add hours based on different cell items/ headers?

    Question #2

How can I add the hours value under an item header cell without having the user enter in their item type each time they return to spreadsheet. Hours/ names that need to be summed are in green. Please see attached xls.
    All replies/ help are appreciated.

    ~Thanks so much

I'm not sure I understand your description of the issue, but I fixed your formula in your attachment, see attachment below, so that it takes the sum of a person's hours across all items(?). As a rule the "criteria_range" and the "sum_range" should always have the same size; that's why your formula didn't work.
