get a cell to display a default value when selected

I hope my question isn't to simple; I'll feel extra stupid if it is! I'm attempting to get my form to display a default value in certain cells when the user selects those cells. In other words, a blank cell next to a description of something will display a value of 1, 2, or 3 automatically when the user selects the cell next to the description.

Ok, now I know how the creator of this form did it; an active x control edited with VB. Any ideas on how to get each control to sum for me? I tried a simple =sum formula... but I can't select each control because it appears to be a control hovering over an actual cell.
