    Adam, what is wrong with your formula?
    if it extracts the ID, and you don't know how many rows you're gonna have when the data is imported, you can only get the result by entring a formula (or a name).
    maybe there is a way to use a macro, which I don't know well

    Mr Zoid Thanks for you help with this one.. the problem with the formula is that i'm importing this spreadsheet into another application. When the import runs with this formula, the entire 65K are imported, mostly as null values... I've 'kind of' got around this problem by adding a custom value for the cell which only allows 1 number to be entered... but i can't set that cell as mandatory based on data in the cell next to it....
