    Making a workbook readonly

This may be an old question, but i have looked to find a solution, but nothing that works.
I know that a workbook/spreadsheet can be made a readonly, but i find that this can be altered even if password protected.

What im looking for is a way of making it so when the user has finished entering in data and they save it, ready to send to anther user to view, that the whole sheet is readonly with no way of editing it ( like protecting the whole sheet).

    I hope this makes sense...

The only reason a password protected file is still editable is because you've taken out the [ ] Locked option in the Format Cell > Protection tab. Make sure they ALL have checkmarks there, then password protect the document. No editing should occur then.

When you protect the sheet, you have the option in there to make it so cells can't even be selected, all they can do is scroll around and read it.

Sorry, I understand what you are saying, but lets see if i can expalin it a bit better.

The spreadsheet has been set up so the user can only fill in certain fields, so the sheet is protected and locked, this protects the formula. So the user can enter and edit data as much as they want, and save as normal.

So during the process of this, this document has to be sent to another person to look at i.e. by email. This is when i want to be able to save the spreadsheet as readonly, so when its passed on the other person can not edited in any way.

I hope that explains a bit better

It like me filling in the spreadsheet and then sending it to you, and i dont want you to alter the spreadsheet in any way, but you can read it.

In our company, Excel sheets sent to others for review are sent in PDF format. Nothing more secure against editing than THAT, and the recipient won't even need Excel to read it.

I use a free PDF creator called PrimoPDF which installs as a printer on your system, so you have the ability to print to a PDF from inside any program. It includes security options too like password to read it.

That would be my recommendation in this situation.

When you print an Excel workbook, you have the option in the first Print window to print the whole workbook, or just the current sheet. Your choice. PrimoPDF receives the output you selected and makes it into a PDF.
