copying looping

i am very new to excel and now i have a problem. suppose i have a column like
gene1
gene2
gene3

and i want to copy it such that every row will appear 3 times in the new column, like
gene1
gene1
gene1
gene2
gene2
gene2
gene3
gene3
gene3

can anyone help me?

only way i can think of at the moment is in cells a4,a5,a6 enter =$A$1
in a7,8,9 =$A$2
in a10,11,12 =$A$3

select a4-a12 then drag down
when done copy column and paste back special values.
