Capture data across worksheets

I am trying to copy data across worksheets in a workbook. Problem is that the data I am trying to copy is captured within merged cells and the destination cell is not merged.

So on sheet 'SLC STATS'! the data is held in merged rows / columns G28:P28 and G29:P29. The destination cell is on sheet ‘synthesis’ G12

When I try a straightforward = sheet ‘slc stats’ on the synthesis page it wont capture the data, it just shows the formula: am I trying to do something which is not possible when rows and columns are merged? I’ve tried different combinations but it doesn’t seem to work?
