    convert month to number

    How do I convert "Mar" to "3'? I used a lookup table but this is creating problems when I sort. If feel like there has to be a function I am missing.

    If you actually have "MAR" typed in the cell, then try:

    =MONTH(A1&" 1, 2008")

    where A1 contains the string "Mar"
