Adding adjacent cells when value of cells is the same

I need to add adjacent cells when the value of cells in one column are the same.
For example:
If in cells A1-A20 have varied dates of banking deposits (02.11.08 and 02.12.08) then the amounts of the deposits entered into adjacent cells B1-B20 ($600.00, $450.00 etc.) are added into separate cells giving you the amount of the total deposit made on that day.

Total deposit on 02.11.08 is equal to ? and total deposit on 02.12.08 is equal to ?.

I know how to add adjacent cells with a given criteria:
=SUMIF(A1:A10,"criteria",B1:B10)

But how do I do the same with the formula automatically looking for like values i.e. "02.11.08" without the formula already having that value given i.e.
=SUMIF(A1:A10,"02.11.08",B1:B10)

Do you mean that the dates in column A are non unique? i.e. you have several instances of 02.11.08, 02.12.08 etc?

Why not just point to the date in column A? i.e.
