VLookup and Hlookup combined using separate workbooks

=[gradebook.xls]Sheet1!$a$1

is the current generic function that I am using...
I went ahead and copied and pasted the gradebook table into the client file book as a separate worksheet... What I am now doing is having each individual cell automatically go out and reference the other workbook (gradebook). This will either be extremely tedious, OR is there a way to autofill the function through each cell... I have attempted the fill handle but that copies the exact function from one cell to the next, instead of progressing to =[gradebook.xls]Sheet1!$a$2 or =[gradebook.xls]Sheet1!$b$1 as examples...Can this be done? or am I stuck being the lowly intern having to copy and paste/edit each function for a progressively growing clientelle base....

The dollar signs lock the cell value in place when you drag it. If you remove them, when you drag, the values will change in a relative way.
