referencing arrays in index and match

i'm trying to reference an array (being a column) in index and match formulas, yet rather than have it referenced to the column (eg $D:$D) i'd like to have it referenced to a cell that specifies the column (eg contacted of cell A1 = D, so reference to array is A1:A1).

I tried the =MATCH(B1,"A1":"A1",0) and =MATCH(B1,&A1:&A1,0) yet neither worked. any suggestions? is this even possible?
