SUM(ColB Where ColA=y)

Please pardon the subject title, I am new here - and new to excel functions. In SQL terms, what I need to do is basically a where clause. Is there any way to perform the following with an excel function?

select sum(number_items) from table where active_member='y'.

Please see the attached xls. Using that as the model, I'd like to find the sum of the "number_items" needed for all "active_members".
