Vlookup - finding a value on one sheet and entering it on another

I have ran through the post, but can't seem to find what I am looking for.
I'm sure this is a simple task, but I don't know the vlookup commands very well.
    My question is:
I have 2 spreadsheets with same and different information, ie. name and address on one sheet, name and amount of a check on another. I would like to combine the two into one spreadsheet. I have both sheets in one workbook, What I want the formula(Vlookup) to do is "find name and enter $ that is associated with that name". Is this doable? I don't know if it makes a difference but the names on each sheet are not in the same order.
