what are the uses for Vlookup and Hlookup?

I need to know what are some of the uses for Vlookup and Hlookup functions.
When they would be useful and the easiest way to use them.

You should also get real comfortable with the Index function, and you can nest the match function within it to assign row and column numbers. That's sort of like combining vlookup and hlookup into one.
